Is Paris Really Worth Visiting?

Paris is always a good idea. Or is it? Paris is somewhere people always dream of visiting but seemingly never get there. I’ll be honest, I only became truly interested in visiting Paris after watching Gossip Girl (sorry). But is Paris worth the hype. Honestly, I’m uncertain.

Admittedly, I did feel uncomfortable most of the time as I don’t speak any French. This is the first time I have been to a country and not spoken the language and honestly I hated it. I didn’t want to be seen as the awkward typical British tourist that didn’t bother to learn a few words in French because ‘everyone speaks English.’ Because of this I didn’t fully enjoy my time here. I can’t, however, blame Paris for this.

Maybe it’s because I went on my own. Paris has a reputation for being one of the most romantic cities in the world. But, to be honest, apart from the Pont de l’Archeveche and the Eiffel Tower, there wasn’t much romance. A lot of people were walking alone or attached to their phones so I’m not sure it was that either.

It may have been the multiple warnings about safety that threw me. Everyone has constant reminders that there are a lot of tourist scams that happen throughout the city so make sure you don’t walk around with a map in your hand but apart from by th Eiffel Tower, I didn’t encounter anyone trying to trick me or sell things to me. I felt safe enough to walk around at night alone so I don’t think that was it either.

I think everyone has positive things to say about Paris that my expectations where so high that I was bound to be disappointed, no matter what.

Paris is always a good idea. Or is it? Let me know what you think in the comments.
